…[crickets chirping]…
I think I’ve figured it out. Ted Thompson is a scout at heart. When’s the busiest time for a scout? Right before the draft you’ve got Pro Day’s at campuses all over the place, the combine, and tons of film work to do. I think Ted just plain forgets free agency is going on. Otherwise, how do you justify keeping Jarrett Bush at $4.5 million for 3 years? He’s your 4th CB at best and if you thought he could play safety, why was Woodson playing safety when everyone else was hurt? Why wasn’t Bush in there?
Meanwhile, you’ve been asleep at the wheel enough that the top guys left in free agency that aren’t restricted or have a franchise tender and aren’t over 30 years old are Cato June (LB – Tampa), Angelo Crowell (LB – Buffalo), Reggie Williams (WR – Jacksonville) and Tank Johnson (DT – Dallas). Those names give you any kind of chills or excitement? Well, Johnson might give you chills but that’s just because you’re afraid either he or his bodyguard is carrying a gun.
While Ted was hiding out in the film room they missed on Canty, Olshansky, Boley, Jason Brown, Bart Scott, Brooking, and McFadden to name a few. At this point, Ted might as well go back in the film room and forget about free agency before he tries to match an offer on Tramon Williams for $2 million a year.
(Williams deserves the money more than Bush does, but he’s an exclusive rights free agent. No one else can make an offer to him. But, matching it makes as much sense as matching Bush’s offer.)
Back to the free agent watch…could someone cue the crickets please?
