As promised, here’s the run down on the most often picked mock draft choice for the Packers in the upcoming draft.
He was a top prospect going into 2007 before being declared academically eligible. He came back this year with an impressive senior campaign and only improved his stock the week of the Senior Bowl. By all reports, he pushed the offensive linemen back into the QB’s lap and just couldn’t be moved out of the middle. He’s a little on the short side for a DT at 6′2″, but at over 330# he has more than enough bulk to clog the middle and stand up the linemen while the linebackers flow to the ball. In a 3-4 defense, he could be just what the Packers are looking for at NT. He doesn’t have the speed to follow a play to the sidelines, but collapses well between the tackles. He probably will never generate a lot of sacks, but is a good bull rusher who could help others get sacks by collapsing the pocket and preventing the QB from stepping up.
He’s the consensus top DT in the draft and a top 10 choice. At the ninth pick he very well could fit Thompson’s desire to draft the best player available and fill a need as well. He very well could make a big difference in the changing over of the Packers D to the 3-4.
Granted, I’ve only seen him play in one game and the above is a paraphrased evaluation from a couple of sites like The Sporting News and Scout.com. But, there’s a lot to like about this behemoth and what he could do on the Packers defense.
