Does it matter who the DC is or what scheme they play if they don’t have the players to do the job. The defensive backfield is fairly good. However, even with their db’s taking wr one-on-one they still couldn’t stop the run. There is no scheme that can get more people available to stop the run then having your db’s going man-to-man. They desperately need better linemen and linebackers. Of course linemen on either side of the ball seem to be a problem for Ted. When was the last time he found a good one? As far as linebackers go Hawk is in my opinion a disappointment as a number 5 overall pick.
Lineman has definitely been a problem for Ted and I believe will uultimately be his undoing. He refuses to sign free agents so he needs to draft them. God knows he’s tried, but he hasn’t been too successful. Case in point, of the preferred starters on D-line last year (Kampman, Jenkins, Pickett, Jolly), one (Jolly – and why he’d be preferred starter anywhere is unknown to me) of them were drafted by Thompson. For the O-line he’s only slightly better since the guards have been in flux and he’s tried to replace them each year. In fact, of all of the players Thompson has drafted, only Nick Collins has made the Pro Bowl. And key players of Driver, Clifton, Taushcer, Kampman, Barnett, Harris, Jenkins and Wells were all aquired before Thompson got there. He’s built depth to replace Driver and you could make an arguement that he’s built depth to replace Harris (I’d disagree with you, but you could make the arguement), but the rest of those guys have no viable backup on this roster. And they’re getting old. The older they get, the easier it should be to replace them.
I agree completely on the subject of Hawk. The #5 overall draft pick should make an impact to your roster immediately. The only position I’d give some leeway on is a QB. A linebacker should make an instant impact and it should be noticeable on the field. Hawk is an okay starter and LB, but hardly worthy of the 5th overall pick. Other first rounders taken after him include Haloti Ngata (sure would help the d-line), Laurence Maroney, DeAngelo Williams, Joseph Addai. You also had 2nd rounders DeMeco Ryans and Greg Jennings who’ve made a bigger impact. Hawk wasn’t even the best pick on his team that year.
