Packers…can they still make the playoffs?

I feel a bit like Jim Mora, “Playoffs?!?!? Are you kidding me?  Playoffs?!?!?”

The answer is that it’s still possible.  The way they’ve been playing lately, it’s just not likely.  The defense that was supposed to make Aaron Rodgers life easier is not there.  The running game that was supposed to make his life easier, it not there.  The experienced offensive line that was supposed to make his life easier, is not there.  All that, and the guy has still been better than I thought he’d be.  But, Aaron Rodgers is just not capable of winning games all by himself (although I’m starting think maybe he did that with the Vikings game).

Why isn’t the defense there?  Well, injuries for one have been a major problem.  The other problem is that the Packers did put enough value on what Corey Williams did for their scheme.  Lastly, they traded away Corey Williams without anyone sufficient enough to replace him.  Justin Harrell?  What a surprise…he’s still hurt.  Great pick Ted.

Running game?  Let’s see…I wonder if taking so long to sign Ryan Grant to a deal could have affected his performance?  Hmm.  Missed training camp?  Check!  Got injury early on that he can’t shake?  Check!  Kind of reminds you of Samkon Gado while he’s out there?  Check!  Nope, I don’t think it had anything to do with it.  Which leads us to…

The Offensive line?  Well, it’s been pretty offensive alright.  Granted there have been a lot of injuries and they may not have jelled yet.  But, they’re suffering from people not being afraid of the QB and a defense that can’t get off the field.  When they are out there, they’re usually behind.  Kind of makes your life harder when they know you’re dropping into pass pro every play.

Lastly, the entire team is making way too many mistakes.  From a punter who can’t punt (that’s another move that’s really helped the team out Ted), to penalty after penalty after penalty.  And just for good measure we’ll throw in some fumbles, dropped passes and ill advised throws that lead to interceptions at a crucial point in the game.  Isn’t that why we got rid of the last guy?  At least that’s what I was told by all of the know-it-alls.  How’s that working out for ya?  Not so good, Dr. Phil.

But, remember this – through the first 8 games last year the Packers had no running game and a porous defense.  They still won games by the skin of their teeth with some big plays and little bit of luck.  Well, the luck hasn’t been there at all and the big plays have been few and far between.  I’ve heard it suggested that the Packers traded away their mojo to New York and they’ll be cursed like the Cubs.  After the last 3 weeks, I’m inclined to buy into that line of thinking.

  1. I agree with all of your points, the stellar defense of last year? Bueller?? Beuller? The running game that was suppose to be Grant? Bueller? BUT, how about Brandon Jackson who hails from Nebraska, and we all know what kind of backs come out of Nebraska, don’t we? But, I DO not and WILL not accpet that our mojo went to New York, The legend of Lambeau and Lambardi and Favre is far to great. Speaking of Favre, would we be 2-3 if he were still with us? I think so. Would we all be talking about his possible regrets of coming back? I think so. I am behind Mr. Rogers 100%, the guy has a cannon and played hurt last week, the same as the legend before him. But where is the rest of the team?, and I sure hope McCarthy is ripping all of the guilty penalty vicitims a new one, because they lost the game for us against the Falcons, hello? Missed field goal? Regardless, I have had to listen to a knucklehead grease monkey of a fan on Sunday who asked me, ’so do you think Driver and Jennings are going to New York next year? I do ‘cuz Rodgers SUCKS!’ Well I firmly and as calm as I could pointed out that the reason we were losing was not because of Rodgers, but our failing D. And then he brought up a rebuilding year, rebuilding what? All the elements are there, if they only were healthy…….in the famous words of my big brother, ‘long live Brett, but Aaron is a Rock Star’. C’mon Aaron, I believe in you, put the team on your back, carry us like you know you can….

  2. I’ve heard a lot of Brett apologists saying that the Packers would have a better record if he were running the team. But, I have to agree with you Ben, I think their record would be very much the same. While Rodgers did not look good against the Cowboys or the Bucs, I don’t think Favre wins those games. Need we remind people of Favre’s record in Dallas or Tampa for that matter? I could also have seen #4 throwing the same pick Rodgers did in crunch time in the Atlanta game.

And, you can tell your friend that Rodgers most definitely does not suck. If you check his stats he’s currently 6th in yards, 6th in TD’s and 10th in passer rating. I’ll take a top ten QB to lead my team.

The mojo suggestion I had previously dismissed, believing rather that people make their own luck. I’m merely being facitious when I look at Halloween decorations, the Cubs curse that remains intact (couldn’t happen to a better bunch of fans by the way), and the sheer luck with which the Packers won in the first half last year, one may start to wonder if the Packers good luck charm is in New York these days.
