I’ve been biting my tongue to let the dust settle from Brett Favre trade before saying anything. I should really wait until Favre sees some action with the Jets, but why? Here’s my thoughts:
- How the Packers brass think they are better with 3 QB’s with zero career starts than with the guy who has more starts than anyone else in history baffles me.
- The bribe money was one of the dumbest things I’ve heard of in a long time. It was gutless and so unlike what the NFL stands for. You line up and play and see who’s got the best score when the clock runs out. You don’t pay people to sit on the sidelines so they don’t beat you. Thompson was an NFL LB and Murphy played safety on some Super Bowl teams. You’d think they’d understand that better than anyone.
- After everything that was said and done on both sides, this was probably the best outcome for all involved.
- Brett Favre’s legacy in Green Bay is safe. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Quick — who did Joe Montana, Joe Namath and Johnny Unitas play for? If you tell me you answered with the Chiefs, Rams and Chargers, you’re lying. Those guys are forever known as playing for the 49ers, Jets, and Colts. And, if you remember Montana’s break up with the 49ers was really no different. They showed him the door while he still had some game. He took the Chiefs all the way to the AFC Championship game his first season there and then to the playoffs in his final season. And, he’s still a 49er.
- Aaron Rodgers has the skills to be a starting QB. He also has a ton of talent around him. He should be able to succeed and win some games — if he can stay on the field. As a Packer fan, I’ve been spoiled with the Iron Man at QB (I think he’s part Cyborg). But, as a long time Packer fan I remember the end of the 70’s and all of the 80’s. I remember having more than 3 different starting QB’s in a season. I realize that’s such a rarity that a lot of people are going to start seeing what the rest of the NFL teams have to go through.
- Last night’s pre-season game means nothing. “Green Bay’s defense looked awesome!” Um, the Bengals offense was without Rudi Johnson and Hushmanzedah (and 2 other guys). Granted, Green Bay played without Al Harris, Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly. But, let’s not crown them Super Bowl champs just yet. “Rodgers was awesome!” 9-15, 115 yards 1 TD, 1 INT. Those stats say he was okay. “But the receivers dropped balls and the pick was a perfect throw the Francies popped up in the air!” Yes, they did and it was. I took a lot of flak for defending some Favre INT’s with that exact sentence. You can’t have it both ways people. Plus, he failed to react to pressure and was sacked more than once. That’s something not enough people gave Favre credit for and they praised his line instead for low sack totals. We’ll see if Rodgers gets better at it with time. It was pre-season and the Bengals defense isn’t all that great, but, Rodgers played okay for his first NFL start of any kind.
- The Jets are not going to win the AFC East and make it to the Super Bowl with Favre. They need more than that. Replacing Pennington with Favre means they’ll probably make the playoffs, as a wold card. Unless half the Patriots roster gets injured, any team from that division that isn’t coached by some guy named Belichik will not win it.
- Lastly, I hope Favre has a couple of good years to go out on like Montana did. To show people he’s still got it and the Packers could have succeeded with him as much as without him
There you have it. My thoughts on the whole thing. Now, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!
