Favre not to show up

Okay, I’m officially pissed off by the media and sports radio.  People are calling Favre a spoiled brat, a punk and worse because he said he was going to show up and now he’s not.  No one is actually bothering listen to what the man said in his SI.com interview.

He said that Thompson asked him to give him a couple of days to resolve the situation, and Favre told him he would.  Oh yeah, that sure sounds like a spoiled brat.

I don’t understand why everyone is after Favre.  You know what, wait until you’re old enough to retire from doing something you love…maybe that’s it.  Most people don’t get the chance to get paid doing what they love doing.  So to them retirement is a goal to achieve rather than a day you hope against hope never arrives.

In this country, when someone asks you, “What do you do?” we make the assumption that they’re asking what is our occupation.  No one assumes that we’re being asked what our hobbies are.  This country’s culture is ever increasing competition and looking out for number 1.  Now imagine the answer to that question was, “I’m retired.” and the sigma that goes along with it.

So the guy wants to play football and the Packers have said they’ve moved on.  The part of me that doesn’t like Thompson thinks he just wanted to put Favre in his place by telling him he’d be the backup.  He probably figured there was no way Favre would show up.  When Favre called his bluff and Thompson finished cleaning out his shorts, he asked Favre for some time to iron something out.  That same part of me thinks he never would’ve talked to other teams had The Hammer not called Thompson and told him to try to trade him.

The part of me that acknowledges he might know a thing or two about football thinks he was just looking out for his team.  So, the fact that Favre handed him the perfect opportunity for Thompson to finally be rid of all of Wolf’s guys and see if he can win with his guy’s was just icing on the cake.  I’m sure the truth is somewhere in between there.
