While I was gone, all this hub-bub about Favre stirred up. Frankly, I’m glad I was on a lake in the middle of nowhere. If those of you who don’t live in Wisconsin got fed up with the media coverage, then imagine what it was like around here. I’ve been asked by many what my take is on this. So, here it is:
The guy changed his mind. The Packers had decided to move on, and don’t want to see him in a Bears or Vikings jersey so they won’t release him. If he wants to play, they’ll trade him to somewhere (Tampa I’m thinking). If he doesn’t want to play in any of those places, he’ll stay retired.
Done.
Look the media wants to make a big deal out of this because they know Packer fans are an emotional lot and will jump on any morsel of information no matter how old or far fetched it is. But, that’s really all there is to it. He made up his mind before he had some time to think about. After thinking about it, he changed his mind. Don’t you ever change your mind?
I guess its different with All Star athletes. They don’t have the luxury of mulling over retirement for years like the rest of us. Their careers are compressed and they’re forced to make decisions much faster than you or I. So, sometimes they don’t make the best decisions right off the bat. I heard someone talking about him — a host on a local sports talk station – wanting his release and they’re response was, “Who does he think he is? He should be treated like every other player. It just doesn’t work that way. He doesn’t get different rules just because he’s Brett Favre.”
Um…you’re wrong on both counts. I remember another guy who played for the Packers who got into the HoF on his first ballot who decided to unretire and asked the Packers for his release. Ron Wolf granted that request with no strings attached. What was that guys name again? Oh yeah, Reggie White. Wolf stated at the time that Reggie had done so much for the organization that if he wanted to go somewhere else, he’d earned that right. Hasn’t Favre done the same?
And superstar athletes — superstars in general as well – do get different rules. Always have, always will. You may not like it and it may not seem fair, but that’s the world we live in. Celebrity gives you access to all kinds of things that aren’t possible for us commoners. Just ask Kato Kalin.
But, I digress. Favre feels like he wants to play again. Great for him. The Packers made a decision months ago to move forward. Great for them. But, if Brett Favre isn’t better than who the Packers have on the roster, then why should they be afraid of him in another uniform? The answer: PR. Especially when Thompson’s hand picked QB gets hurt after the second game a the Packers are started a rookie and that lovable country bumpkin is chewing them up in a purple uniform.
There, I’m no better than the rest. I spent 1 paragraph on the issue, and a host of others paragraphs on commentary of the GM, the news media, the world in general, and more on the GM. Good thing I wasn’t around to hear about all of it.
