I have been trying to get rid of that acrid taste in mouth that showed up when Lawrence Tynes kicked his 47 yard field goal in overtime to knock the Packers out of the playoffs. It’s only gotten slightly better.
Should we blame Favre for losing the game? Well, he had a lot to do with it but it’s not all his fault. It’s a team game and they wouldn’t have been in the game without him. But, even he admitted the opportunity presented itself and he didn’t rise to the occassion. Of course, neither did Al Harris. Neither did the defensive line. I rarely heard the linebackers names mentioned. The offensive line didn’t open any running lanes and Ryan Grant didn’t create any on his own. We had to settle for field goals and didn’t rattle a young Giants QB into tossing it up for grabs. Yep, plenty of blame to go around there. Oh and one more thing, can we rip the page out of the playbook that has the shuttle pass on it and burn it? I have not seen that play work in Green Bay since Sherman’s first year as coach.
At the start of the game the Giants came out hitting people and the Packers didn’t. That’s not what they did to Seattle. The defense set the tone and caused a turnover. Against the Giants they looked passive. To me, the game was really lost in the 3rd quarter.
The Giants marched down the field with the aid of 4 Packers penalties including pass interference and roughing the passer. With that TD, the Giants went ahead 13 – 10. The Packers answered with Favre’s TD to Donald Lee, but that drive kept the defense on the field and the offense off. It gave the Giants a confidence they never lost.
Yet, at the end of it all, it was overtime we had the ball and we were moving down the field. The way we had played, we should have lost in regulation. Favre’s interception merely insured what should have been decided with 4 seconds left in the game.
Yet, it was one heck of a year. I did predict an exit in the Championship game due to a lack of a running game, which turned out to be pretty accurate. Granted that was a revised prediction. At the start of the year, I didn’t see this coming and anyone who did is employed at 1265 Lombardi Ave. Everyone else is lying.
And above all it was a lot of fun. Certainly better than watching them lose 3/4ths of the games like in 2005. If Favre comes back great! If he rides off into the sunset, I wouldn’t blame him. But, I’m sure there will be plenty of coverage on that coming up.
