Less than 1 year from now…

…all of us will go to the polls to select the next President of the United States.  Yawn!

Could there be a less inspiring bunch of candidates?  Every election I wait for someone to stand up and impress me.  Every election my hopes are dashed on the rocks of mediocrity and apathy.  And I’m talking about both sides of the party aisle.

The democrats are probably going to offer up Hillary.  While it would make the first woman president, I don’t think policies would change much.  She seems more hawkish than her husband, and I’m certain my taxes will not go down while she’s in the White House.  Obama is the only one of the Democrats who seems to be close to a breath of fresh air, but I can’t quite figure out what the junior Senator from Illinois stands for.  That kind of makes it hard to vote for the guy. He does seem like the best chance for change, but I don’t know what that change would be.

The republicans are a mess.  They’ll probably offer up Giuliani, but it’s anyone’s race at this point.  I’m not a big Rudy fan.  I’m not sure what being the mayor of New York during one of the most tragic moments in American history qualifies him for.  “He held together the city during the worst tragedy ever!” people will say.  First, it was not the worst tragedy ever.  Gettysburg, Franklin, Iwo Jima, the Bataan march and Pearl Harbor were certainly more tragic most people were born after all of those events.  (I’d be happy to got into detail about all the number of lives lost either during or because of those events, but it would be a rather long post.)  Second, from afar it didn’t look like Rudy should get the credit for holding the city together.  It seemed like the firemen, police and emergency workers held together the city.  Rudy was just smart enough to stay out of their way and a savvy enough politician to say the right words.  Thompson, no.  Romney, no.  McCain, he seemed a lot more viable when Dubbya got the nod than he does now.  They all seem to be more of the same failed policies of the Bush administration.  The only one who seems a little different is Ron Paul.  But, he doesn’t stand a snowballs chance of getting the nomination since nobody knows who he is.  And, while different, different does not always equal good.

Hillary vs. Rudy?  It’s been done already.  Literally.  She won, remember?  Now the whole nation gets to play out the New York senate race?  As I said, yawn!  There’s still a year left, so someone may impress me yet, but history would suggest that I not hold out hope.
