The Reskins lost their entire offensive line, the Packers couldn’t run the ball to save their lives, Favre let the ball float more than he usually does, and the Redskins snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. On top of that, the refs had an awful day as well.
I’ve said before that good teams overcome bad refs. The Redskins are a pretty good team decimated by injuries and an inability to keep a handle on the ball. Green Bay now sits at 5-1 and despite having no running game must be considered a good team. They beat a good team and overcame some horrible officiating.
How horrible? Let me give you the examples that stand out in my head.
- The play Cullen Jenkins was injured on. He was literally sandwiched and tackled by the tackle and guard. It happened right in front of Jason Campbell before he threw what became a 20+ yard completion. Yet, no yellow flags were found.
- On numerous plays, Aaron Kampman was dragged to the ground by both of the people trying to block him.
- On third and short Vernand Morency broke a play to the outside where he was tackled by his facemask a yard short of the first down. Here is one place where the refs were consistent because the same thing happened to Clinton Portis in the fourth quarter in the same spot on the field. Barnett grabbed him by the facemask and the refs didn’t call that on either.
- Mark Tauscher’s phantom holding penalty on the TD pass to James Jones. I DVR’d the game so I could see it again at a different angle and I cannot for the life of me see where there was any holding. I didn’t see it live and in person and I didn’t see it on the replay. Which BTW, led to a missed FG and Green Bay came away with no points.
- Bubba Franks apparent TD catch in the other end zone. He actually got one foot down while getting pushed out. If that pass wasn’t a TD then the NFL needs to erase Greg Olsen’s TD catch against the Pack from the prior week because he didn’t get any feet down with the push out the refs gave him. Perhaps they were just surprised Bubba could make such an athletic play and therefore he couldn’t have caught it.
There were others, but those were the most eggregious and the Pack still won — thank you Charles Woodson, Nick Barnett, Aaron Kampman, Atari Bigby and the rest of the defense. Those 4 guys seemed like they were everywhere. Either that, or there were other people on the field wearing replica jerseys.
I was seated in a perfect position to see both of Favre’s picks and let me tell you, Sean Taylor can haul ass. All of the Washington DB’s were pretty good in fact. Probably the best Green Bay’s faced this season. On the pass intended for Jennings, I could see him break open when Favre let the ball fly. But, it floated a little bit on Brett and Jennings didn’t come back for it. It wouldn’t have been much of a problem because when Brett let go of the ball Jennings was wide open. Unfortunately, Taylor crossed the whole field in no time at all to make the pick. Same thing with the one to Jones. He had gotten past everyone and the ball hung up a little bit in the wind and it was underthrown. The field conditions just weren’t conducive to the long ball game, but Brett kept trying. So, he now owns the INT record.
It may have been sloppy play, sloppy field and a few sloppy drunks in the stands, but a good team overcame them and got the “W”.
