If the Brewers somehow manage to represent the NL Central Division it will be a minor miracle and a major accomplishment in the field of “Beating the Odds”. Basically, the Brewers need to win out the rest of the season and the Cubs have to drop at least 3 of their remaining games. Both teams have 6 games left to play. The Cubs get to play Florida and Cincinatti. The Brewers have 2 games left against St. Louis and then 4 games against the best pitching in baseball. That is not a good recipe for success.
Which leaves us with, what do we do now? This was the best opportunity to win a division title in over a decade and they pissed it away. On the positive side, it is still possible to finish with the first winning record in 15 years. Big deal. They should have been in the playoffs and for the 3rd year in a row the team took a dive after the All-Star break. They also continue to be a terrible road team. Obviously, good ol’ Nedly can get a team started, but he just can’t seal the deal. Perhaps it’s time for a change. Another comparison:
Ned Yost (‘03 – present) winning percentage : .462 (371-432)
Jerry Royster (2002) winning percentage: .361 (53-94)
Davey Lopes (‘00-’02) winning percentage: .425 (144-195)
Yep, folks that’s right, he’s not much better than Davey Lopes was as a manager. I hear that La Russa fella might not feel like coaching in St. Louis next year. I think he may have won a thing or two in his day.
