Glass is half empty

I must be a half empty kind of guy.  Why?  Because the Packers sit unexpectedly at 3-0, 2 games ahead of the Bears and Vikings, and I expected so much less from them to start the season.  I should be elated.  Still, I can’t help but think of what might have been.  Maybe it’s the fresh sting of the Brewers collapse that is keeping me from truly enjoying this Packers season.  In retrospect these are the kinds of moves a guy like Ted Thompson should love because he’d still have a lot of money under the cap, he’d still have all of next year’s draft picks and he’d have a more dynamic football team.

Chris Brown re-signed with the Tennessee Titans (another zone blocking football team) for a 1-year contract worth $1.85 million on June 18th.  Ted Thompson didn’t even bring him in for a look.  Brown’s stats so far this year: 42 ATT, 247 YDS, 5.9 YDS/ATT.  I will grant you that a majority of those yards came in game against the Jaguars, but it still is more yards than the entire Green Bay Packers team has combined.  That seems like it would have been worth it.

Randy, Randy, Randy, where art thou?  Well, he’s in Boston of course with these outrageous numbers: 22 Rec, 403 yds (that’s 134.3/game) , 5 TD’s.  He signed a cheap one year deal with the Patriots.  Admittedly, he’s probably hoping to have a huge year and cash in during free agency in 2008.  So?

With a running game and what would be one of the most frightenening  receiving corps in the NFL, the Packers would be legitimate contenders for the NFC crown.  Now, they look like a playoff bound team that has no running game and will therefore bow out early in the post season.  Bummer too, because it could have been a crowning achievement for Favre.  He might have had a chance to go out like Elway, like he always wanted.

  1. You are “Glass is half Empty” Packer fan because you lived through the Packers of the 70’s and early 80’s. You know exactly how bad it could be… and maybe will be. Cheer up; they’re 3-0. The worst they can do is 3-13. In years past, that may have passed for a winning season.
