Packers turn in profits

I saw this story and I really, really, really wanted to go on a Ted Thompson penny pinching rant.  Its right at the tip of my finger tips.  But, Thompson actually spent 8 million more last year than the previous year.  Something is always more than nothing I guess.  The Packers reduced expenses because Thompson fired the coaching staff and replaced them with cheaper ones.

Ah, but doesn’t that mean they had to keep paying the coaches?  Not if they buy them out and have the expenses hit the previous years books.  See, Green Bay’s fiscal year appears to be one month shifted from the NFL year.  They report their information from April 1st to March 31st.  The coaches were fired before then and replaced.

But last year Thompson signed Woodson, Pickett and Manual to relatively big deals for each player.  And don’t forget the big one for Kampman.  He signed no one this year.  So, when the numbers come out next year I’ll be ready to pounce on Thompson.  Of course, he all of his draft picks pan out, I’ll have to delete that draft.
