Harlan hangs on

So, right before John Jones is to take over as CEO (a job current CEO Bob Harlan hand picked him for in 1999), he takes an indefinite leave of absence.  You wait 8 years for a job and then duck out at the last moment?  And the Packers have been very vague about why.  They did name “management concerns” as the reason, whatever that means.  That leaves only 2 scenarios that I can think of.  He’s not healthy, or Harlan’s not happy with how Jones is working with other front office staff.

Jones did have heart surgery earlier this year and its entirely possible that the entire experience has been tough on him.  Perhaps he just hasn’t gotten his energy back to a level that would let him effectively run an NFL franchise.  It is probably the most likely scenario, but not the most fun.

It’s much more fun to speculate that he doesn’t like Thompson as much as Harlan does.  Wouldn’t that be much more fun?  Thompson would presumably get a short leash since he isn’t Jones’ guy.  That might be kind of nice.  We might actually expxlore all options to building a team and not add 11 rookies every year.  But, I’m sure that’s just a pipe dream, along with Brett’s hopes of getting to the Super Bowl again.
